Speaking on the occasion of the second broadband conference on broadband internet communication in South East Europe, titled “
See Broadband 2007”, Curcic pointed to the fact that the development of broadband communication remains at a low level compared to EU member countries, and the average broadband penetration rate for the region is 3.16%.
She explained that 69,000 households in Serbia have internet connections for broadband access, while during the middle of last year the number of persons with ADSL connections was 1,311 per one million.
According to Curcic, apart from the ADSL technology, which is the main instrument of broadband development in the EU, there is a significant base of potential broadband users in Serbia.
Talking about internet access in Serbia, Curcic recalled that according to the Serbian Statistical Office, 26.5% households in Serbia own a personal computer, while 18.5% households have internet access.
Head of the administrative board of Telekom Srbija Milan Bozic said that the company has ambitious plans for the development and widening of broadband services, while offering an acceptable price to users.
Bozic said that more than a million users have obtained internet connections through Telekom Srbija, of which 56,000 users have ADSL connections. He expressed his expectation that by the end of this year the number of ADSL users will increase to 286,000.
This year’s conference dedicated to broadband has gathered representatives of leading companies from more than 20 countries, and during this three-day event 60 lectures and presentations will be held concerning all key areas of broadband industry.
The conference has been organised by the company “TNI”, the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce, the Foreign Investors Council, the Serbian Ministry of International Economic Relations, Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe and the American Chamber of Commerce in Serbia.
