Bogoljub Lazarevic
At the opening of a two-day conference on peace education and conflict resolution in schools, taking place at the Palas Hotel in Belgrade, Lazarevic stressed that the conference aims at sharing experiences in this area and improving the cooperation between teachers and the education ministry as regards education on tolerance.
According to Lazarevic, the term peace education envelops an entire process of acquiring knowledge, experience and skills whose aim is to establish better and more productive inter-human relationships and the respect of differences.
He said that from 2000 onwards the Serbian government has done a great deal in this field, adding that the education ministry is already implementing several programmes whose goal is to create an inspiring and safe environment and improve and maintain good multicultural relations and tolerance in schools.
From 2005 onwards, the government has begun the project “School without Violence”, campaigns “Classroom of Good Will” and “Hello There”, as well as the project “Feel Free to Say”, whose goal is to protect children in schools from violence, abuse and neglect.
Executive Director of the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) Paul van Tongeren said that also taking part in the conference are representatives from other continents with long experience in peace education.
The two-day conference was organised by the Nansen Dialogue Centre Serbia and the European Centre for Conflict Prevention (ECCP). Conference participants will focus on improving cooperation among teachers, NGOs, education ministry and local authorities.
