Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today in talks with French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy that the plan proposed by UN Special Envoy Marti Ahtisaari regarding the future status of Kosovo-Metohija is illegal and illegitimate, because it violates the UN Charter and the UN SC Resolution 1244 and as such does not fulfil a single condition to be presented before the Security Council.
Kostunica said that Ahtisaari’s plan is not based on compromise; it represents solely the interests of ethnic-Albanians and is an attempt to seize 15% of Serbia’s territory, which is contrary to the mandate entrusted to Ahtisaari.
Kostunica stated that due to this it is necessary to continue negotiations to find a viable solution for the province through compromise between the two sides, while upholding international law and the UN Charter. He added that such a solution is substantial autonomy for Kosovo-Metohija within the borders of Serbia.
The Serbian Prime Minister warned that it is unacceptable that ethnic-Albanians threaten violence against Serbs and other non-Albanians if Kosovo-Metohija is not given independence, and pointed out that the international community should condemn such threats.
Douste-Blazy said that France is observing the resolving of the Kosovo-Metohija issue with particular attention and considers stability in the region to be very important.
