Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today in a meeting with President of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Yevgeny Primakov that the proposal by UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari for the future status of Kosovo-Metohija does not meet conditions to be considered before the UN Security Council.
Kostunica stressed that Ahtisaari’s proposal represents a flagrant violation of the UN Charter as well as the principles of preserving sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, adding that such a document is not an act of compromise.
The Serbian Prime Minister pointed to Serbian stands that the UN Charter guaranteeing sovereignty and territorial integrity to all states must not be violated and stressed that Serbia cannot be an exception from generally applied rules on which international order is based.
He said that Serbia highly values the consistent and principle-based stand of Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin that universal principles must be respected and that the solution to the future status of Kosovo-Metohija must be acceptable both for Belgrade and Pristina.
Kostunica said that Ahtisaari’s proposal is not based on a compromise and does not stem from the talks, but protects interests of the Albanian side only.
Primakov said that his attitude to this issue is the same as that of Prime Minister Kostunica and pointed out that he is sure that the Serbian policy on Kosovo-Metohija is just.
He said that it is necessary to patiently seek a solution to the future status of Kosovo-Metohija and warned that no hasty solutions can be passed as they would have very serious consequences worldwide.
Primakov also pointed out that Kosovo-Metohija cannot be seen as a unique case.
