Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said in today’s meeting with Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Kubis that proposal for the future status of Kosovo-Metohija by UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari violates basic principles of the UN, which therefore makes it unacceptable.
Kostunica expressed expectation that the UN Security Council will respect the UN Charter which set the principles of international order and which guarantees sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.
The Prime Minister stressed that it is inadmissible that Serbia, an UN member, is severely deprived of part of its territory and also warned that such a precedent would have unforeseeable consequences.
He pointed out to the importance of starting real negotiations on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija as there were no real negotiations so far, apart from only two meetings.
Kostunica explained that Ahtisaari’s proposal does not stem from negotiations and a compromise between the two sides as it protects interests of Albanian side only.
A compromise for Kosovo-Metohija is possible to find only if the UN Charter, UN SC Resolution 1244 and the Constitution of Serbia are respected, Kostunica stressed adding that the compromise would be substantial autonomy for the province within the borders of Serbia.
Kubis said that Slovakia has attentively observed the Kosovo situation and stressed that a resolution regarding the Slovak stance toward Kosovo will be on the agenda of Slovak parliament soon.
