First meeting of Project Working Group for construction of gas pipeline through Serbia

The Serbian Ministry of Energy and Mining stated today that the Project Working Group for construction of the gas pipeline through Serbia held its first meeting today. The pipeline will extend from the border with Bulgaria to the Croatian border.

According to the statement, possibilities of further development of this infrastructure project were examined at the meeting. It is recalled that the Working Group was formed on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding which was signed on December 20, 2006 in Moscow, between the Serbian government, public gas company “Srbijagas”, company “Jugorosgas” and Russian “Gazprom Eksport”.

Representatives of these institutions and companies who form this working body adopted, following detailed talks, the methodology of work on drafting the technical and economic documents which are necessary for the further realisation of this project.

The construction of the gas pipeline across Serbian territory will achieve three key aims, says the statement, and specifies that an alternative and reliable source of natural gas supply will be secured, preconditions for gasification of the entire country will be created, and the status of Serbia will move from being a consumer to a regional centre for transport of natural gas.
