Following the meeting, Dimitrijevic said that he expects the two countries to step up economic ties and Bulgaria to support Serbia-Montenegro’s efforts to join the European Union and NATO.
A free-trade agreement between Serbia-Montenegro and Bulgaria is expected to help the two sides boost the foreign trade volume which currently stands at some $400 million, said Dimitrijevic. The agreement should also allow for reducing Serbia-Montenegro’s $80 million negative trade balance with Bulgaria, he added.
The talks also focused on ways to improve cooperation in tourism, the minister went on to say, noting that Serbia-Montenegrin tourists spend around $250 million on their summer holidays in Bulgaria every year.
Vasilev said that the free-trade agreement will positively affect bilateral trade, adding that Serbia-Montenegro and Bulgaria are expected to see a $500 million foreign trade volume in two years.
Vasilev went on to say that Bulgaria will continue to support Serbia-Montenegrin efforts to integrate into European institutions, adding that he expects Bulgarian companies to start investing in Serbia-Montenegro in a few years. He also called on both sides to boost trade volume and tourist exchange to help reduce the trade deficit.
