Speaking at the opening, Petkanov pointed to the fact that the opening of the Consulate represents new perspectives in cooperation between the two countries.
Membership of the EU from January 1, 2007, obliges Bulgaria to respect standards regarding the visa regime. The visas will be free of charge, and for many categories of citizens the process of issuing a visa will be accelerated, said Petkanov.
He said that there will be those who will not be satisfied with the new visa regime.
My message to the public is to look upon things positively, to be tolerant and defend outcomes of European integration, said Petkanov, and added that Bulgaria offers full support and help to Serbia on her way to European integration.
Serbian Minister of Justice Zoran Stojkovic said that the opening of the Consulate General in Nis will serve as an incentive for further successful bilateral cooperation between the two countries. He stressed that in prespective, when Serbia enters the white Schengen list, this Consulate will have far less work regarding the issuing of visas.
The opening of the Consulate General was also attended by representatives of the Bulgarian Embassy in Belgrade and local self-government.
