Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today during the talks with Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema that Serbia's position is that fundamental principles of international law must be respected, of which the first and basic one is the preservation of sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.
Kostunica said that an increasing number of EU countries support Serbia in its efforts to secure the respect of basic principles of international law and added that these countries warn that there should be no exceptions because every deviation from basic principles of international law would have serious consequences.
The Serbian Prime Minister said that the solution for the future status of Kosovo-Metohija should be sought through compromise of the two sides and underlined that Serbia is willing to guarantee substantial autonomy for Kosovo-Metohija within Serbia's borders.
D'Alema said that the solution to Kosovo's future status must be acceptable for both sides and a result of compromise and not an imposed solution, but one reached through dialogue.
According to D'Alema, it is not good to predict the final outcome while the solution is still being sought.
Kostunica and D’Alema said that Serbia and Italy have friendly relations and extremely satisfactory cooperation in the economic, cultural and scientific spheres.
They stressed that today's official opening of the Palace of Italy in Belgrade and the signing of the agreement on reprogramming and reducing Serbia's debt of 54% towards the Paris Club of Creditors are confirmation of Italy's and Serbia's good relationship.
