Government expects that Germany would advocate European solution to Kosovo issue

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today that Germany, as one of the crucial European countries, is expected to strongly pledge for a European solution to the Kosovo-Metohija issue.

In a statement to Tanjug news agency, Kostunica said that Germany will have an extremely important role in the process of negotiations on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija within Serbia, especially bearing in mind that Germany will preside over the EU as of January 1, 2007.
He said that the Serbian government expects that Germany will strongly advocate for a European solution to the Kosovo-Metohija problem, which means respect of the UN Charter, principles of international law and state borders of all Balkan countries.
Kostunica warned that any other approach that would lead to a violation of international law, and thus the splitting up of the Serbian state, and would result in unforeseeable consequences.
He announced that Serbian government representatives will use diplomatic means in the forthcoming period so as to intensively present to Germany the necessity of Kosovo-Metohija essential autonomy be set up according to clear democratic principles, with argumentation that this is the only solution in compliance with European experience and European standards.
