Vojislav Kostunica addresses the media after session of the Serbian parliament
After the solemn session of the Serbian parliament in which the new Constitution of Serbia was proclaimed, Kostunica said that the constitutional bill is the result of compromise and added that it is possible to later amend and change some of its parts.
Everything will be easier after that, Kostunica said and added that all that we have gone through compels us to pass the constitutional law and thus allow for the Constitution’s realisation.
Kostunica said that the supreme legal act will bring stability to Serbia, not only at this moment in time but also in the future because “good constitutions last”.
Kostunica said that no one can take credit for the contents of the new Constitution as it belongs only to the people and can not be taken away from them.
This Constitution truly belongs to people and everything surrounding it is not only solemn but historic, Kostunica said.
Serbia, being an independent state, after 103 years, got a good democratic constitution with the widest social and political consensus, said Kostunica.
The Prime Minister added that the Constitution is adequate for its time, written according to what is best in constitutional law and practice at this moment, taking into account experiences of other countries.
Some of those countries underwent similar trials, and it was in this way that democratic institutions, human and minority rights and state integrity were secured, Kostunica concluded.
