The Government of the Republic of Serbia announced today that the line authorities and institutions have continued implementing activities to mitigate the consequences of adverse weather conditions, with a focus on fighting fires in the Deliblato Sands.

Activities continue to combat fires, address heatwave consequences

The fire site in the Šumarak area of the Deliblato Sands was visited today by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić, who is also Commander of the state Emergency Response Team, the leadership of the Emergency Management Sector, representatives of the Ministry of Defence and the Municipality of Kovin and representatives of all companies of importance for fire protection involved in the firefighting operation.
According to the report submitted to the Operational Team of the Emergency Response Team, the fire in the Deliblato Sands has affected an area of more than 2,000 hectares.
The fire on Mt. Stolovi near Kraljevo has affected approximately 200 hectares, while the terrain is extremely inaccessible, with no access roads, rocky and dangerous to traverse.
There are currently 22 active wildfires in open areas across the Republic of Serbia.
Due to the heatwave, drought, low water levels and other risks, the line authorities and institutions are monitoring the situation with regard to water quality, water supply for the population, ensuring sufficient quantities of water for the needs of businesses, livestock farming and irrigation, electricity supply, the safety of the power infrastructure and air quality.
Activities are also under way to normalise the operation of the Bezdan and Bogojevo pumping stations, which have contributed to a slight increase in water levels in the Danube-Tisa-Danube Hydrosystem.
