Serbia gets its first WOAH Reference Laboratory

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management announced today that the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), at its 93rd General Session in Paris, unanimously adopted Resolution No. 33, appointing the Kraljevo Veterinary Specialist Institute (VSI) as a WOAH Reference Laboratory for lumpy skin disease.

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Professor Dragan Glamočić, PhD, noted that the appointment of the Kraljevo Veterinary Specialist Institute as the first WOAH Reference Laboratory in Serbia is a major recognition for the state, the veterinary profession and all institutions that have invested for years in strengthening the animal health system.

This confirms that Serbia possesses the knowledge, expertise and capacities and enjoys a strong reputation within the international veterinary community, the Minister stated, adding that the recognition comes a decade after lumpy skin disease was successfully controlled and eradicated in the country.

According to him, the Ministry will continue investing in the development and strengthening of veterinary service capacities, as well as in laboratories, equipment, personnel, field services and information systems, because animal health, food safety and the stability of agricultural production are of strategic importance to Serbia.
