Vojislav Kostunica
Kostunica pointed out that the Preamble of the new Constitution and the provision that Kosovo-Metohija is an integral part of Serbia have been copied word by word from the most important international act, the UN Charter.
He added that the "golden rule of international law on non-violability of sovereignty and territorial integrity of UN member states is now confirmed with Serbia's national law in the Constitution's Preamble."
Therefore, with the new Constitution, we do not violate but rather endorse and respect the rules of international law. The timely adoption of the new Constitution is also very important because with the new highest legal act, Serbia continues talks on the province's future status with additional legitimacy, the Prime Minister said.
If more than three and a half million of Serbia's citizens welcome the Serbian Constitution at the referendum and decide that with the new Constitution Serbia is firmly committed to respecting international law, that will represent the soundest support for Serbia's principled politics that part of a democratic state's territory cannot be snatched away and that borders of the existing countries cannot be altered by force.
That is why I am convinced that now is the best moment for the new Constitution to be adopted, but the only right thing is that citizens themselves decide whether they want a new Constitution, Kostunica concluded.
