In a statement to the news agency Tanjug, Kostunica said that the sovereign will of the nation is the most competent judgment and it is the citizens of Serbia who will have the last word on the Constitution. He added that it is good that we have the rigorous condition that half of the electorate must vote for the Constitution, because it ensures that the Constitution will be a truly democratic one.
He said that until now not a single Constitution of Serbia was approved by the collective will of the people through a referendum, and stressed that therefore it can rightly be said that the destiny of Serbia lies in the hands of her citizens.
The Serbian Prime Minister pointed to the fact that the new Constitution envisages Serbia as a modern democratic state, while safeguarding the integrity and unity of the country. He added that the Constitution defends the rights of all ethnic groups and the right of the Serbian nation to preserve Kosovo-Metohija where this state and the Serbian national identity was born.
By adopting the new Constitution we will get a firm and lasting foundation on which we will build, develop and regulate in the best manner our joint home – the state of Serbia, said Kostunica.
