Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met today with US assistant secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried and said that basic principles of international law, primarily the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity, must be respected.
Kostunica stressed that the UN Charter, the Helsinki Final Act, as well as UN Security Council Resolution 1244 guarantee Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity and its internationally recognised borders.
The Serbian Prime Minister affirmed that all Serbian institutions are of one mind and advocate a unanimous position that Kosovo has always been and will remain a constituent part of Serbia's territory.
He said that Serbia is seeking a compromise solution to the Kosovo issue and that it has proposed essential autonomy for Kosovo-Metohija within Serbia's borders, which is a solution in line with the highest European standards.
Kostunica reiterated that all arguments are in favour of Serbia and that it will not accept any frivolous solutions that could create a dangerous precedent.
At the meeting Kostunica and Fried agreed that economic relations between Serbia and the US are satisfactory and that there are possibilities for the countries to improve their economic cooperation.
