Serbia takes pride in her army officers

Belgrade, 16 September 2006

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today that Serbia is proud of her army officers who have sworn to defend the honour of their homeland, and added that they should take pride in the great Serbian tradition, because they have examples to inspire them of which they can be proud.

Speaking at the ceremony held for promotion of students of the 126th and 127th class of the Military Academy to the rank of sub-lieutenant, Kostunica stressed that Serbia once again has her own army after Kajmakcalan.

He also said that Kosovo-Metohija will always be united with Serbia, as will be stated in the new constitution.

Serbia will defend Kosovo-Metohija with all democratic methods, and not give up because we stand in defence of justice and law, said the Prime Minister.

He said that Serbia and her government will conduct a policy of peace and Serbia has never lost and will never lose Kosovo-Metohija.

Serbian President Boris Tadic awarded on the occasion the traditional military decoration, namely the sword, to the three best students of the Military Academy.

You are the first officers of the Serbian Army who will carry the burden and meet the challenges of defending Serbia in the first half of the 21st century, said Tadic at the ceremony which was held for the first time after 90 years in front of the former federation palace.

A great duty awaits you, said Tadic, and added that the Serbian Army should be a factor of stability and have a respectable and significant presence on the international scene in the 21st century.

Today’s ceremony included a parade to the sound of “March on the Drina”, as military planes of the Serbian air force “Orao” (Eagle) and “Super Galeb” (Super Seagull) flew overhead.

The ceremony was attended by Serbian Minister of Defence Zoran Stankovic and representative of the Serbian chief of staff, Lieutenant-General Zdravko Ponos, ministers in the Serbian government and foreign military representatives in Belgrade, as well as representatives of the political, cultural and public circles in Serbia.
