Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, attended today a session of the Road Traffic Safety Coordination Body, at which current activities and measures aimed at improving the safety of all road users were discussed.
Macut emphasised that much has been done in this field to date, but that there is still a need to attain certain goals, especially considering the high standards in Europe that need to be met.
The Prime Minister supported the proposed amendments to the Traffic Safety Law, emphasising that the proposed measures should become a standard in everyday conduct.
According to him, it is necessary to recognise the adequate sanctioning of violations, as well as the importance of a high level of penalties and penal policy, given that traffic safety is one of the priorities of the Government.
Therefore, constant cooperation between all relevant bodies and institutions is necessary, alongside the continuous improvement of the legal and strategic framework in this area, the Prime Minister noted.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić, who chaired the session of this body, said that in 2025 through to 23 December, 31,924 traffic accidents occurred on Serbian roads, an increase of 3.69% compared to the same period last year.
According to him, 475 people lost their lives in these accidents, while more than 18,000 people were injured.
