Call on Bahamas authorities to return to respecting principles of international law

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that it strongly condemns the decision of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas to recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo, which grossly and deliberately violates the international legal order based on the Charter of the United Nations, precisely in the year that marks the 80th anniversary of its adoption.

Such actions constitute a dangerous precedent and directly contribute to the further erosion of the fundamental principles of public international law, primarily the principle of respecting the territorial integrity of UN member states.

Activities directed against sovereign states undermine trust in the international system and lead to its further destabilisation and anarchy.

The decision of the authorities of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas is particularly unconstructive in the context of the Belgrade-Priština dialogue, as it represents a unilateral move that directly threatens the dialogue.

The Republic of Serbia will not accept attempts to impose fait accompli or legitimise unilateral acts that are contrary to international law and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244.

Serbia will also continue to fight, decisively and in principle, with all available diplomatic and political means to protect its state and national interests.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the authorities of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas to reconsider their decision and return to respecting the universal principles of international law, which are the basis of stability and peace in international relations, the statement said.
