Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, attended tonight’s Ceremonial Academy on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mileva Marić Einstein, one of the most significant women in the history of science.
Addressing representatives of the Provincial Government, academic, scientific and cultural communities at the Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sad, Prime Minister Macut emphasised the historical significance and lasting value of Mileva Marić Einstein’s work and added that he was honored to be in a place that symbolizes culture and creativity.
According to him, the achievements and dedication of this scientist, the first Serbian woman to study physics and mathematics in Zurich and, despite a difficult life, continue her work in the leading scientific centers of that time, still inspire young generations to enrich science and society with their work and ideas.
Her perseverance, at a time when women did not have equal opportunities in science, is an indicator of how true desire and courage can overcome all obstacles, and therefore the life and work of Mileva Marić Einstein remind us of the importance of continuous and priority support for education, research work and innovation, said Prime Minister Macut, adding that Serbia is proud of numerous scientists who have left a lasting mark on the world, as well as of children who today win the highest awards at international competitions.
Prime Minister Macut pointed out the obligation to provide young scientists with good universities, resources, mentoring support and, above all, the opportunity to develop their ideas.
A large part of the programmes of the relevant ministries and the Government of Serbia, the Prime Minister added, is aimed precisely at supporting young talents, scientists and entrepreneurs, who are the driving force and future of Serbia.
The Prime Minister also said that Mileva Marić Einstein is an example of how much can be achieved through perseverance, curiosity and love for science, and emphasised that this is why anniversaries like this are important, so that the story of the great scientist can inspire and empower young people and remind the world of the importance of her mind and contribution.
Prime Minister Macut said that the Government of Serbia will continue to invest in science, research and innovation and support programs that encourage young people to develop their potential in the field of science and technology.
The ceremonial academy concluded with an artistic program dedicated to the life and work of Mileva Marić Einstein and a call for her scientific legacy to be permanently cherished in educational and cultural institutions across Serbia.
