The statement recalls that 53 European countries are attending this year's regional meeting, which is to last until September 14 in Copenhagen. A Serbian delegation, comprising Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic and Assistant Minister for Health System Planning and Development Snezana Simic, is also attending the meeting.
This year's meeting will primarily concern the European strategy for prevention and control of mass non-infectious diseases, the 2008/2009 programme budget and the mid-term strategic plan for the European region for the period 2008–2013.
The strategy includes measures and activities for the prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases, malignant diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, diabetes, mental health disorders and chronic musculoskeletal diseases.
The strategy will demand that WHO member countries make efforts to prevent and modify risk factors for the occurrence of these diseases and their progress, as well as the painful and premature deaths as consequences of the stated conditions.
