Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić met in Washington, D.C., with Congressman Michael Turner to discuss bilateral relations between Serbia and the United States, as well as the further strengthening of political cooperation.

Đurić informed the Congressman about the challenges Belgrade faces, especially regarding the security of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija and attempts to restrict basic political rights, such as participation in the electoral process.

The talks focused on the current situation in the region, while planned activities in the US Congress related to the Western Balkans region were also discussed.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs previously met in Washington, D.C., with Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the most senior Democrat on the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Đurić conveyed to Senator Shaheen his strong belief in the potential for improving relations between Serbia and the United States, highlighting the United States as one of the most important foreign policy partners of the Republic of Serbia.

The Serbian Foreign Minister reiterated Serbia’s commitment to further strengthening ties with the United States and moving closer to the strategic partnership we are striving for.

He informed Senator Shaheen about the latest developments in Kosovo and Metohija and the decision of the Central Election Commission to deny the Serb List the right to participate in the upcoming elections, which seriously questions their democratic character.

According to him, such a move in this atmosphere further complicates the dialogue between Belgrade and Priština and makes the rapprochement of positions and finding a compromise solution even more elusive.

Special attention was paid to the circumstances related to the functioning of oil company Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS), as well as ways to overcome challenges in this area, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

In Washington, D.C., Đurić also spoke with US Congressman and member of the Serbian Caucus Brad Schneider, and on that occasion said that Serbia wants to build an even more intensive political dialogue and economic ties with the United States based on common interests and values.

The head of Serbian diplomacy emphasised that the establishment of a strategic dialogue would provide an additional impetus for strengthening comprehensive cooperation in numerous areas of common interest.

A special focus of the conversation was on the importance of the Serb community in America and its potential in strengthening ties between our countries.

Đurić pointed out the importance of US support in the process of normalising relations between Belgrade and Priština and warned that this process has been seriously slowed down due to the unilateral moves of the Priština authorities and the continuous campaign of pressure on the Serb community in Kosovo and Metohija.

They also discussed the challenges Serbia is facing in relation to NIS and the activities that Serbia is undertaking to resolve this situation in the most favourable manner as soon as possible.
