Following a meeting at the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Medicine, attended by representatives of medical faculties from Belgrade and Athens, Macut said that the establishment of permanent structured cooperation between the universities, as well as their medical faculties, was discussed.
The Prime Minister stated that an agreement has been reached to shortly sign memorandums of cooperation between, first of all, the faculties of medical sciences in Belgrade and Athens, and then to move to the university level, where the level of cooperation would be increased in all areas of common interest.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the representatives of Serbia had the opportunity to talk with experts in the field of applied medicine who are the leaders of postgraduate training, primarily in the areas of master of science and doctoral studies at the University of Athens, and that the Serbian side provided equivalents that can be integrated into the programmes of both universities.
In the discussions related to medicine, as he stated, the fields of interest are primarily related to clinical medicine, but also to certain applied areas, such as epidemiology, i.e. clinical epidemiology and statistics, which are the foundations of modern medicine for analysing data related to patients and for achieving better treatment outcomes.
According to him, these discussions were the first step that will raise the level of quality of study programmes at both universities.
Macut said that new ideas for cooperation were identified, as well as for programmes that already exist at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade within the framework of the already well-known Erasmus programme, but that cooperation could further expand to European project groups, such as Horizon and other opportunities.
The Prime Minister added that this would be of exceptional importance for the future of our regional connectivity and that in this way Serbia’s desire to join the European Union as soon as possible would be implemented, given that we have already opened certain chapters related to science and education, and have also closed some.
He expressed the hope that this will help to open some clusters that are still ahead for Serbia, such as Cluster 3 or Cluster 5, as soon as possible and that through this cooperation we will show that Serbia is absolutely ready and integrated into European and scientific, but also medical programmes, as well as all other programmes covered by our universities.
I hope that we will soon have very good news about the signing of these memorandums of cooperation, said Macut.
In addition to the Prime Minister of Serbia, the talks were also attended by Acting Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Nataša Milić, endocrinologist and Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade George Mastorakos, Vice-Rector of the University of Athens Stathis Efstathopoulos and Professor Ioannis Tigelis.
