Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić met today with a delegation from the United States Congress led by Congressman Michael Turner.
Gašić emphasised on this occasion that the two countries are connected by decades of diplomatic relations and that the Republic of Serbia is committed to initiating a comprehensive strategic dialogue with the US, adding that bilateral military cooperation is continuing to grow, and that establishing strategic-level ties with the US will contribute to strengthening mutual trust and cooperation through numerous bilateral meetings, visits and projects.
The Minister of Defence stated that military-to-military cooperation is substantive and aimed primarily at achieving interoperability and increasing the operational and functional capabilities of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, emphasising the importance of joint exercises between the armies of the two countries.
He said that cooperation in the field of defence with the United States will continue to be improved for mutual benefit, and that cooperation between the Serbian Armed Forces and the US Armed Forces is important for regional stability, but also for peace in the world, as evidenced by the participation of Serbian and American peacekeepers in the multinational operation in Sinai, as well as the presence of Serbian peacekeepers in numerous United Nations and European Union missions.
Gašić particularly emphasised the cooperation within the State Partnership Program, which the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces have been developing with the Ohio National Guard for almost 20 years, and which is one of the key elements of successful bilateral military cooperation.
Congressman Turner thanked the Minister of Defence for the opportunity to have a constructive conversation, as well as for the opportunity for both sides to consider further development of cooperation in areas of strategic importance for both countries, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defence.
