Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, stated that at today’s summit of Western Balkans leaders in Tirana, he insisted on the opening of Cluster 3 and other chapters, which our country has been waiting for for more than three years.
In a statement to Tanjug news agency, Macut assessed that Serbia has fulfilled a large percentage of the elements of accession to the European Union and that it is on the right track to meet the remaining deadlines by the end of the year, as well as to continue with new activities next year.
He said that the summit focused on topics related to economy and transportation, ie regional connectivity, noting that the topics that have already been raised at the London Summit were also discussed, such as the free roaming zone in the Western Balkans region, which is of exceptional importance.
The thing that we already initiated and encouraged is communication with transporters, i.e. truck drivers who work in the region of the Schengen agreement, bearing in mind that the Western Balkans countries are exempt from that framework, the Prime Minister said.
According to him, for this reason we are proposing a new methodology for calculating the duration of stay and we will submit this proposal to the European Commission together with Great Britain as soon as possible.
Macut assessed the participation in today’s summit as very operational and constructive.
Serbia has maintained its strategic position and attitude towards the entire process in Europe, i.e. towards the European Union, as a reliable and recognisably good partner, the Prime Minister concluded.
Macut, who participated in the "Growth Plan" panel together with European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, said that he expects the first payments conditioned on reforms from the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans to be made early next year.
This was also emphasised by representatives of the European Union - Marta Kos and Director-General of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighborhood Gert Jan Koopman, the Prime Minister pointed out and expressed the expectation that we will already have answers to these questions in the first quarter of next year.
