Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, said today in London that his initiative regarding the liberalisation of the visa regime between Serbia and Great Britain has been met with understanding from British officials.
After a reception given by British King Charles III on the occasion of the Berlin Process, Macut said that he sent a request to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper to consider the possibility of liberalising the visa regime, at least for certain categories of Serbian citizens, i.e. for those who want to get educated or attend advanced academic programmes in Great Britain.
This initiative has been met with understanding, and it was also discussed that this issue could be part of a wider package within the framework of Serbia's getting closer to the European Union, explained the Prime Minister.
The new electronic visa application system that was recently introduced was also discussed.
According to him, although the process of obtaining British visas has never been simple, the understanding of the British side to listen to the needs of the citizens of Serbia and the willingness to facilitate the procedures is noticeable.
The Prime Minister announced that he would present a proposal for further liberalisation in the field of roaming at the Western Balkans Summit, as well as a proposal related to the formation of a transport club for countries that are not EU members.
Macut said that during the royal reception, he presented Serbian culture, as well as our country's position in relations with its neighbours, but also with European countries.
He underlined that the British king showed interest in talking with representatives of all countries in the region individually, taking an interest in the situation in the region, and also sent personal greetings to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.
The Prime Minister specified that topics of security importance were also discussed during the meeting, primarily in the field of migration, which is one of the ongoing issues for Great Britain.
In this context, Macut emphasised that Serbia has a positive and responsible approach to this topic and that it has been pursuing an effective policy in resolving this issue for more than ten years, with a high level of cooperation with British and European security services, which the United Kingdom appreciates.
He also added that the reception was an opportunity for a series of informal talks with the prime ministers of the countries of the region, including Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, Prime Minister of North Macedonia Hristijan Mickoski and Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić.
The Prime Minister specified that Serbia will present the message at tomorrow's summit of the Western Balkans countries, which is being held within the framework of the Berlin Process, that the political conditioning imposed by Priština is unacceptable for Serbia.
We believe it is necessary to break out of the vicious circle of political conditioning that is unacceptable to us, because we are continuously conditioned by pressure from the provisional institutions of self-government in Priština, he pointed out, assessing that these issues should not be a stumbling block for Serbia.
