The Ministry of the Interior stated that last night, a boat carrying at least ten people, including citizens of the People’s Republic of China, capsized on the Danube, near the town of Plavna.
According to the statement, the Novi Sad Police Department received reports around 20:45 last night that the boat had capsized. The patrols of the Novi Sad Police Department, the border police and members of the Emergency Situations Sector were sent to the location immediately and the Croatian police were also contacted.
In a rescue operation in Bačko Novo Selo, a Chinese citizen was pulled from the water and pronounced dead, while another four Chinese citizens were found and provided with medical assistance.
According to currently available information, the Croatian police pulled five Chinese citizens from the Danube – three men and two women.
The police will continue with the search operation and, in cooperation with the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad, which has qualified this event as a criminal act of unauthorised crossing of the state border and human smuggling, will take measures and actions to determine all circumstances of this event, the statement added.
