Serbia best ranked in region for gender equality in politics

The Office of the Minister without portfolio in charge of gender equality, prevention of violence against women and economic and political empowerment of women announced that, according to the latest data from the Women’s Power Index, which analyses countries’ progress in gender equality in political participation, Serbia ranked 22nd out of 193 United Nations member states.

With this result, Serbia is the best ranked country in the region when it comes to the representation of women in political and public life.

The research measures the representation of women as heads of state and government, ministers in government cabinets, members of national parliaments, as well as representatives in local government bodies.

According to the same research, Iceland took first place, with a woman president at the head of the state – the fifth in the country’s history. Switzerland has had the most women in that role, a total of seven.

As for the countries of the region, Albania ranked 25th, Croatia 52nd, Montenegro 78th and North Macedonia 82nd.

Bulgaria ranked 118th, Hungary 144th, Romania 150th and Bosnia and Herzegovina 153rd.
