The government adopted today an amendment to the Decree on special conditions for trade in certain types of goods, passed at yesterday’s cabinet session to limit retail chains’ margins on basic foodstuffs and other goods of importance for citizens’ supply.

The Decree, which enters into force on 1 September and will be valid for six months, will cap margins at a maximum of 20% for products classified in 23 categories, and now the amendment also contains provisions introducing ceilings on the logistics rebate and compensation for shortages and write-offs to 3% and 1%, respectively.
The goal of adopting the Decree is to protect the market, that is, to prevent excessive price increases for goods of great importance for citizens’ supply.
Yesterday, when the Decree limiting margins at 20% was adopted, retail chains began to put pressure on manufacturers to sign contract annexes before the Decree entered into force, and the government responded immediately today with a new decree to protect producers and consumers.
