Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić met today with EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Priština Dialogue Peter Sørensen to discuss the current situation in Kosovo and Metohija.
Đurić expressed full support for the role and mission that Sørensen is carrying out, while also pointing to a series of escalating measures undertaken by the Priština authorities in recent weeks with the aim of further worsening the position of Serbs.
The Minister emphasised the necessity of the continued presence of international organisations and missions in Kosovo and Metohija, as well as their greater engagement with the aim of improving the overall security situation, full respect for all freedoms and rights, as well as the preparation of the upcoming elections under democratic and fair conditions.
He stressed that it is necessary for the international community, and especially the EU, to exert stronger influence on the authorities in Priština in order to avert further unilateral and provocative moves against Serbs and representatives of their political organisations.
According to him, the Priština authorities are trying to create new focal points of tension in Kosovska Mitrovica by building a new bridge, under the guise of alleged infrastructure development.
Đurić stressed that Belgrade encourages and expects the participation of as many Serbs as possible in the upcoming elections in Kosovo and Metohija, and that he believes that this will pave the way for their return, in appropriate numbers and in an adequate manner, to all institutions and levels of government.
During the meeting, it was assessed that de-escalation of the situation in Kosovo and Metohija is necessary, and that dialogue, open and substantive talks and implementation of the agreements reached represent the best path for resolving outstanding issues and normalising living conditions for all citizens in Kosovo and Metohija.
At the same time, it was expressed that the meeting of the heads of the negotiating teams of Belgrade and Priština will be organised again in Brussels in the near future.
