Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić stated today that 27 police officers were injured in the violence that occurred on the streets of Serbia last night, while 47 people were taken to official premises.
In his address to journalists, Dačić stated that in many places there were attacks by protesters in front of the premises of the Serbian Progressive Party and, at several locations, of the Socialist Party of Serbia, as well as on supporters of the Serbian Progressive Party who gathered in large numbers in front of their party boards.
The protesters injured 70 to 80 citizens who have different political views from them, he said, adding that five official vehicles and other equipment were damaged in attacks on the police.
According to him, the police were working to maintain public order and peace and suffered mass attacks on their forces.
He pointed out that, if it had not been for the intervention of the police and the army, there would have been casualties, stating that public gatherings took place in 90 locations across Serbia.
Dačić noted that the most difficult situation was in Novi Sad, partly in Belgrade, and that there were also attacks in Kraljevo, Lazarevac, Pančevo and other places.
The police will maintain peace, while respecting the law and everyone’s right to public assembly, the Deputy Prime Minister said.
