Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić and Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija Petar Petković met today with representatives of embassies of the Quint countries – the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy – as well as the chargé d’affaires of the EU Delegation to Serbia, to discuss the situation in the southern Serbian province following the arrest of Assistant Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija Igor Popović.

Arrest of Popović continuation of political persecution of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija

It was noted that Popović’s arrest represents a continuation of the political persecution of Serbs, this time involving the arrest of a member of the Serbian government’s negotiating team, which Belgrade considers completely unacceptable.
Đurić recalled that the arrest took place in the days marking the commemorations for the Serb and Roma victims in Orahovac and Staro Gracko.
The head of Serbian diplomacy concluded that, through the arrest of Serbs and Serbian officials, as well as other illegitimate actions, the authorities in Priština are attempting to impose their own version of the truth and reinterpret historical events according to their own narrative, rather than on the basis of facts, and reiterated the expectation that Igor Popović will be released as soon as possible.
The meeting with Đurić and Petković was attended by the ambassadors of Italy and the United Kingdom, as well as the chargés d’affaires of the embassies of the United States, France and Germany, according to the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
