Inmates of Belgrade district prison on huger strike

The Directorate for Enforcement of Penalties of the Serbian Ministry of Justice stated that 320 inmates of the Belgrade district prison refused breakfast this morning.
Detainees said that the reason for refusing breakfast is the slow work of courts on their cases, as well as poor living conditions in the prison, above all microclimate conditions and too many detainees per cell.
For the same reasons, 65 inmates sewed their lips together in protest.
All inmates who sewed their lips were given timely and appropriate medical care, while those on hunger strike are under constant medical surveillance, reads the statement.
