In a press conference held after meeting with Romanian President Traian Basescu, Kostunica said that the solution should be reached in negotiations leading to a compromise, where none of the parties would lose.
He said that he received support from the Romanian President that a solution to the Kosovo-Metohija issue should be European, which means a certain level of autonomy and protection of minority rights in the province.
Kostunica rejected any possibility of organising a referendum in Kosovo-Metohija on the province’s future status.
Basescu noted that this is his first visit to Serbia after it regained independence and stressed that the principle of border inviolability must be respected when solving the problem of Kosovo.
It is extremely important that the solution is reached through dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, stressed Basescu and added that the two parties have the chance to provide mutual political stability, a European future and regional stability through a solution for Kosovo-Metohija.
Belgrade is the key factor to the stability of the Western Balkans and the European vision will not be complete without a solution guaranteeing security in the region, the Romanian President explained.
Kostunica said that he and Basescu discussed Serbia’s negotiations with the EU and agreed that it is important to continue negotiations on a partnership level.
Basescu said that Romania will politically and in every other way back Serbia’s efforts to integrate into Europe.
The two officials also discussed economic cooperation and particularly emphasised the potential of the Danube River.
