Serbia committed to United Nations values, goals

Minister without portfolio in charge of gender equality, prevention of violence against women and economic and political empowerment of women Tatjana Macura met with UN Under-Secretary-General, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna Ghada Fathi Waly.

Macura emphasised Serbia’s commitment to implementing international standards and practices in order to create a society of equal opportunities and combat all forms of discrimination.

Macura particularly pointed out the importance of cooperation with the UN and organisations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UN Women and their support in providing expert assistance and training for domestic institutions in order to further strengthen Serbia’s capacities.

The UN Under-Secretary-General praised Serbia’s efforts in these areas, and expressed the organisation’s readiness for more intensive cooperation with the country, especially through prevention, education and support projects in the protection of victims of violence and human trafficking.

During the meeting, the importance of strengthening international cooperation in the fight against violence against women, human trafficking and gender-based crime was discussed, as well as the improvement of the position of women through economic empowerment and support for vulnerable groups.
