Prime Minister Miloš Vučević led a state ceremony in Oplenac today to lay wreaths and honour the 90th anniversary of King Alexander I Karađorđević’s death.
At the ceremony, Vučević said that the terrorist murder of the Yugoslav king was an event that shaped history, essentially firing the first shot in World War II.
The Prime Minister assessed that that was a shot at Yugoslavia and the Serbian people and added that the death of King Alexander I Karađorđević undermined the peace established by the Treaty of Versailles.
He stated that the evil of the Ustaše revealed its true nature at that time, uniting all those who sought the destruction of Yugoslavia and vengeance for Serbia’s victories from 1912 to 1918.
Vučević recalled that the then-fascist dictator of Italy, Benito Mussolini, provided complete logistics and support to the Ustaše terrorists who killed King Alexander I Karađorđević.
Thereafter, terrorism and killings by Nazis and fascists became commonplace in Europe. Submission to Nazi-fascism in Europe would cost the world millions of lives, the Prime Minister said, noting that the death of Alexander I Karađorđević was ground zero of that evil, which was to engulf the entire world.
He assessed that there is little awareness in our collective memory and collective discourse of great and world-important events that originated directly from the Serbian people.
I note this with regret, but also with a great desire to change this bad practice, said the Prime Minister.
