A Council of Europe delegation of experts toured demolished Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries in Kosovo-Metohija in order to make a detailed assessment of damage made to the Serbian Orthodox cultural heritage during
the March outburst of violence by ethnic Albanian extremists.
Apart from the Council of Europe representatives, the expert team included representatives of the Serbian Ministry of Culture, interim self-government institutions in Kosovo-Metohija and the Eparchy of Raska and Prizren, read a statement by the Eparchy.
The team which toured the demolished religious sites from May 12 to 15 was divided in two groups so that it could pay maximum attention to each site and make an appropriate damage assessment.
Bishop of Raska and Prizren Artemije said that this visit was much better organised than the previous one by a UNESCO expert team, especially because this time representatives of the Serbian Ministry of Culture were allowed to join the team.
He requested that the Orthodox monuments of culture in Kosovo-Metohija be defined as Serbian national heritage in the Council of Europe's report, in line with the Resolution 1244 of the United Nations Security Council.
Thirty-five Orthodox churches and monasteries in Kosovo-Metohija were torched or demolished from March 17 to 19.
