Wreath laid at Monument to Unknown Hero on Avala on occasion of Statehood Day

Belgrade, 15 February 2024

The envoy of President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Serbian Army Aleksandar Vucic, Minister of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs Nikola Selakovic, accompanied by the Chief of the General Staff of the Serbian Army, General Milan Mojsilovic and the Commander of the Guard, Brigadier General Nikola Dejanovic, today laid a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Hero on Avala, on the occasion of Serbia's Statehood Day – 15 February.

After the wreath-laying ceremony, accompanied by the Guard of Honour and the playing of the national anthem, Minister Selakovic wrote in the memorial book:

"Freedom was and remains and will be the guiding idea and the main value that generations of Serbian citizens have fought for, are fighting for and will fight for, fueled by the example of Serbian heroism of the insurgents from 1804 and 1815 and the wisdom of the political and diplomatic skills of the Constitution makers from 1835.

For the Serbian people and all citizens of Serbia, the state was and will be the guarantor of freedom, and freedom is a chance for development and progress. Long live Serbia!"

Today, Serbia is celebrating the Statehood Day with a series of events, in commemoration of Sretenje in 1804, when the First Serbian Uprising began, and in commemoration of the same date in 1835, when the first modern Constitution of Serbia was adopted.
