Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation Jelena Begovic visited Prokuplje, where the "Closest to Space" programme was opened today in the National Museum of Toplica, which will last until 6 December.
This programme is aimed at raising public awareness of the importance of the Vidojevica astronomical station. The station is located on the mountain of the same name near Prokuplje and has the best location for observing the night sky in Serbia. Because of its uniqueness, it can become part of the world network of dark sky parks.
Begovic pointed out that the observatory on Mount Vidojevica offers truly extraordinary conditions for observing the night sky with 80 to 100 clear nights a year.
The special value of the Vidojevica astronomical station is its position - far from the lights of street ads, cars and lighting, while the telescope named after our scientist Milutin Milankovic is in perfect observation conditions for astronomers, both amateurs and professionals.
