Spain will support opening of two clusters

Belgrade/Madrid, 19 November 2021

Minister of European Integration Jadranka Joksimovic confirmed today that Spain will back the opening of two clusters as part of Serbia’s European integration process, noting that the topic of the enlargement of the European Union (EU) is gaining importance in the Union itself despite numerous challenges and the stagnation which everyone in the region feels to a greater or lesser degree.

At the invitation of Director of Elcano Royal Institute Charles Powell, Joksimovic participated in Madrid today in the conference themed “The Next EU Enlargement: Perspectives and Obstacles”, which was organised in coordination with Slovenia’s presidency of the EU.

Joksimovic said that Spanish State Secretary for the European Union Juan Gonzalez-Barba Pera underlined that the support to the opening of both clusters is a credible response of the EU and, at least on their behalf, to everything Serbia has shown in the previous period.

She underlined that it is very important that Spain sent us a positive message because this country is a very respectable member of the EU.

Joksimovic expressed conviction that by the end of Slovenia’s presidency of the EU at the Intergovernmental Conference Serbia will make an important step – he still cannot confirm whether that will be the opening of one or two clusters because the EU Member States are still analysing whether Serbia deserved the opening of one or two clusters.
