Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today at the meeting with Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Artis Pabriks that a solution to the Kosovo-Metohija issue must be reached through compromise of both sides and according to principles of international law and inviolability of sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.
Kostunica stressed that the solution must not be imposed, because at that point it would stop being a solution at all, and recalled that the Serbian parliament adopted at yesterday’s session the Resolution on Kosovo-Metohija, giving mandate to the negotiating team for the talks on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija.
The Prime Minister pointed out the necessity of conducting direct talks and reaching the solution through dialogue and compromise, with a full respect for UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
Kostunica said that the stability in the region must be taken into account and pointed out that Serbia is ready to guarantee essential autonomy as the highest form of autonomy, in the same way the autonomy for the Serbian community must be guaranteed within the autonomy for Kosovo-Metohija. He also recalled that entering the phase of talks on the future status of Kosovo must not leave the process of standard implementation unfinished.
Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Artis Pabriks agreed that the implementation of standards on Kosovo-Metohija and stability in the region are of greatest importance.
