Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today at a meeting with the delegation of the Olympic Champions Association that sports have a significant place in society, and pointed out that Serbia has gained a wide reputation thanks to great successes achieved by its athletes, who in that way have represented their country in a distinguished manner.

The representatives of the Olympic Champions Association said that the Serbian government has devoted great attention to sports, and that thanks to that, sports have begun to gain the position they deserve in society, illustrating the statement with the Serbian government’s decision to award financial prizes for medal winners in large sporting competitions.
The Prime Minister endorsed a suggestion by the Olympic champions’ delegation about providing regular income for medal winners, and announced finding a concrete way for providing finances for this purpose.
The delegation of athletes at the meeting with the Prime Minister consisted of head of the Olympic Champions Association Jasna Sekaric, Ivan Gubijan, Franjo Mihalic, Djordje Perisic, Zarko Varajic, Aleksandar Sostar and President of the Serbia-Montenegro’s Olympic Committee Ivan Curkovic.
