Klaus Mangold and Vojislav Kostunica
At the meeting, Kostunica pointed out that economic relations between Serbia and Germany are traditionally good and still improving, and invited German businessmen to invest in Serbia. He stressed that Serbian legislature and regulations are being harmonised with those of the EU, that there is a positive business atmosphere in the country, and that foreign investments have increased.
He pointed out that the announced beginning of talks on the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU is another guarantee of safety for investments, as is the World Bank report that put Serbia among the leading countries in the implementation of reforms.
Mangold said that Germany is advocating a tight cooperation with Serbia-Montenegro and its EU accession and recalled that Germany is one of Serbia’s biggest economic partners.
He said Serbia has made huge progress and has enormous potential, illustrating this with an example of a survey conducted among businessmen in Germany, who predicted that Serbia will experience an enormous level of economic development.
Mangold said that German businessmen are interested in cooperation in all areas, especially privatisation, energy, trade cooperation, infrastructure and agriculture.
It was suggested at the meeting that a symposium covering Serbian-German economic relations be organised in Germany in early 2006, at which opportunities for investing into Serbia’s economy could be presented in detail.
Other participants in the meeting were Serbian Minister of Economy Predrag Bubalo, Minister of International Economic Relations Milan Parivodic and Minister of Capital Investment Velimir Ilic, as well as over 20 representatives of German industrial associations and companies.
The Committee on Eastern Europe comprises the eight largest associations of German banking, insurance and trade companies, and more than 50 large companies doing business in Eastern Europe.
