Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Selakovic and his Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio signed in Rome today an agreement on cooperation of the two ministries.
Selakovic and Di Maio also attended the signing of a Memorandum of understanding between the two countries on the employment of family members of the diplomatic and consular and administrative and technical staff.
The Ministers discussed bilateral cooperation, dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina and mutual aid in the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking at a joint press conference at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Selakovic underlined that with its social and economic development, Serbia has shown that the countries of the Western Balkans can develop and reach European standards.
I expressed gratitude to Italy for its principled and firm support to the opening of all unopened chapters for which we are ready, and for support to Serbia and other countries of the Western Balkans in planning their future in the EU as full members, Selakovic stated.
Di Maio stated that Italy sees Serbia as a crucial country for the stabilisation of the Western Balkans and commended the constructive approach of Belgrade in the recent years and its contribution to making significant steps forward.
He pointed once more to excellent bilateral relations and said that Italy sees its cooperation with Serbia as strategic.
Serbia is helping the region of the Western Balkans in a concrete way and in that regard I wanted to express gratitude personally to Minister Selakovic. We talked about European integration of Serbia, which Italy supports. We believe that Serbia's rightful place is in Europe, Di Maio stated.
According to him, Italy expressed the hope that Serbia will intensify its reforms regarding the accession to the EU, especially when it comes to dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.
I encouraged both sides to cooperate constructively, especially thanks to the presence of EU Special Representative for Belgrade-Pristina dialogue Miroslav Lajcak. We believe that it is possible to achieve that goal, but everyone must take part in it intensively, Di Maio said.
