Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica
In a statement to the Beta news agency, Kostunica said that what the Serbian people expect and need to work together on is that they lead the life they deserve, that they surmount the difficult changes that still await them as painlessly as possible, and that they meet each new day with optimism and belief that they are building the Serbia they would all like it to be.
According to Kostunica, the two great topics, October 5 and Europe, are essentially connected, and can best be summarised in a phrase: European Serbia.
On October 5, 2000, Serbia decided to take the course of values and true integration into the EU. Such course also involves thorough internal reforms, creation of rule of law in the country and an effective economy, Kostunica said.
“We have all wished and hoped that the concrete results would be visible, and life for all the citizens be considerably better. But things have been changing, gradually and surely, and some important results have already been achieved. The EU Council of Ministers’ decision to begin negotiations on a Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the European Union confirms this”, the Prime Minister pointed out.
As Kostunica said, this is the crucial stage in Serbia-Montenegro’s relations with the EU and it requires joint efforts of both the state and society in order to achieve Serbia-Montenegro’s strategic goal – a full EU membership.
He stressed that, in a way, both the government and the opposition share success and responsibility for a faster EU integration process, adding that it is not good that one opposition party is opting out, only because it is not a leader in this state business in this period.
“It would be much better that everybody take their share of responsibility and that we jointly achieve the goals that are not the goals of a particular political partly, but of the whole nation and state”, concluded Kostunica.
