Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica talked today with Slovakian Minister of Foreign Affairs Eduard Kukan and said that the EU Council of Ministers’ decision shows that the European institutions have confidence in Serbia’s abilities and resolve to implement reforms and fulfil all obligations waiting on the road to European integration, stressing that Serbia’s strategic and top priority goal is full EU membership.
Kukan congratulated Serbia-Montenegro on the Council of Ministers’ decision to begin the talks on the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, adding that Serbia has made great progress in implementing reforms.
He especially praised the Serbian government’s attitude towards national minorities, illustrating this with the Slovakian minority’s exceptional status in Vojvodina.
The status of Kosovo-Metohija was also discussed at the meeting. Kostunica and Kukan jointly concluded that the solution to the issue of the province must not be imposed but result from compromise, and that it is necessary that Belgrade participates in this process.
Kukan warned that any rash move would have consequences on the stability of the region and Europe, adding that Slovakia wants to actively participate in finding a solution to the situation in Kosovo-Metohija.
Good bilateral relations between Slovakia and Serbia, countries bound by historical and cultural ties, were also stressed at the meeting.
