Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today, during talks with Minister of State for Europe in the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office Douglas Alexander, that the state union of Serbia-Montenegro’s top priority at the moment is the beginning of negotiations on the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the European Union (SAA), expected to begin in October.
Douglas Alexander said that Great Britain, as the country which is presiding over the EU, expressed hope that Serbia-Montenegro’s negotiations on the SAA will begin next month.
During the meeting, the situation in Kosovo-Metohija was also discussed, with Kostunica stressing the importance of fulfilling standards in the province and that Serbs are being deprived of basic human rights, above all the freedom of movement.
The Serbian Prime Minister said that the solution for Kosovo-Metohija must be sought within the existing borders of the state union of Serbia-Montenegro, and added that special emphasis must be placed on the preservation of regional stability.
The state union is committed to meeting international obligations, as well as to concluding cooperation with the tribunal in The Hague, it was also said at the meeting.
