Kostunica told a press conference following a meeting of heads of government of Southeastern European countries in Salzburg, Austria, that this task is in the spirit of European values and that it can only be fulfilled through integrations, not disintegrations.
He pointed out that Southeastern Europe has always been part of Europe in historical, cultural, and every other sense and that it should soon become a part of Europe formally.
According to him, the major obstacles are weak institutions, primarily when it comes to corruption and organised crime, as well as disintegration processes.
The least one can do is to respect the inviolability of state borders, Kostunica stressed.
“I am referring to Serbia-Montenegro and Kosovo-Metohija, for which there is an institutional plan to ensure expanded autonomy with respect for individuals’ rights and the strengthening of human and minorities’ rights,” said Kostunica.
“The germ of disintegration must be stopped, because it can represent a precedent in the future,” Kostunica warned and noted that a solution lies in European and trans-Atlantic integrations.
Kostunica also said that the two-day meeting focused on free trade agreements and the initiative to conclude a single free trade pact, based on the free trade agreement of Central Europe.
The meeting also pointed out the need for an increased level of foreign investment, which is crucial for the development of the region, according to Kostunica.
