During today’s meeting, the importance of preserving the state union of Serbia-Montenegro in order to speed up Euro-Atlantic integration was stressed.
Kostunica said during the meeting that standards in Kosovo-Metohija have not been met, stating that basic human rights are not being respected, that there is no freedom of movement, and that there has not been progress in the return of displaced persons.
The Prime Minister pointed out that Serbia has achieved significant progress in the cooperation with the Hague tribunal, and added that there is a strong political commitment to fulfilling all obligations, and that the Serbian government is approaching this problem very seriously.
Scheffer said that the KFOR mission in Kosovo-Metohija will be efficient and concluded that there is further need for the presence of NATO troops. He pointed out that KFOR is ready to take all necessary steps in order to prevent an outbreak of violence, such as that which occurred on March 17th of last year when Serbian churches and monasteries were burnt.
The NATO Secretary General pointed out that Serbia-Montenegro must fulfil its international obligations to the Hague tribunal in order to achieve further successful integration.
