Heinz Fischer, left, and Vojislav Kostunica
Kostunica said that there must be no further fragmentation in the region and he stressed that it is necessary to take the road of European integration. He said that joint accession to the EU would be the best thing for the state union of Serbia and Montenegro.
Speaking about Kosovo-Metohija, Kostunica said that standards in the province have not been achieved and he added that basic human rights are not respected, that there is no freedom of movement, and that there has been no progress in the return of displaced persons.
He stressed that a solution for Kosovo-Metohija should be sought through dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina and in the form of expanded autonomy that preserves the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia-Montenegro.
Fischer backed Belgrade’s initiative to launch an open dialogue with Pristina on all issues. He said that Austria, which takes over the EU’s rotating presidency in 2006, also supports opening stabilisation and association talks between Serbia-Montenegro and the EU in October.
The Austrian President said that Serbia-Montenegro and Austria are connected by historical and friendly ties.
